Squirrel Stopper Bird Feeder Pole System. It's squirrel proof! This bird feeder support system will stop all squirrels! Suet Feeders

This is a great bird feeder to attract bigger birds such as chickadees, cardinals, woodpeckers or blue jays. Suet is actually a piece of animal fat that you put inside a container covered with wire. The holes has to be big enough to allow the birds to pick at the fat. This is great food to feed the birds during the winter months.

Building a suet bird feeder is easy with two small plates of wood attached together with 6 inches long wood sticks, a rope to hang it with and some wire with holes of a half of an inch wrapped around the sticks, creating a caged area on the middle to put the suet.

Hopper Feeders

This is the most often sen bird feeder and it is easy to build one in any version you like. A large platform at the bottom can keep the seeds from falling on the ground and get wasted. The design consist in a little house with walls and a liftable roof for easy refilling. Making small openings allow the seeds to spill slowly onto the bottom tray.

This kind of feeder attract a lot of different variety of birds such as blue jays but also squirrels, especially if they are suspended under a tree. Try to put your feeder in a place where the squirrels cannot access it too easily.

Tube Feeders

The tube feeders you can buy at the stores are made of plastic and will not last very long. Soon the plastic will break with the cold and you will have to get new ones. Building one with wood is a great idea. To do so build a long rectangle box and drill one inch holes all around it. Adding perched under the holes will attract a large variety of small birds that cannot cling as easily as woodpeckers and finches can.

When you hang a wild bird feeder in your yard you sometimes wonder who you're feeding, the birds or the squirrels! Squirrels are so agile and have a voracious appetite and can empty your feeders before you have a chance to get back to the house after filling them. There is no such thing as a totally squirrel-proof wild bird feeder, but there are a few things you can do to help keep the sunflower seeds for your birds.

Squirrel-Proof Feeders. As I mentioned, there is no such thing as a totally squirrel-proof feeder. They are wily little critters and can get in places you would never imagine that they could. There are feeders, however, that make it a lot more difficult for them. Feeders with cages around them are great for songbirds and to keep squirrels out. The cages are just big enough to allow the smaller birds access and to deter the larger birds and squirrels. There are also feeders that work on a weight deterrent. When a squirrel (or large bird) perches on the feeding bar, the weight closes the feeder. When the weight is removed, the feeder opens again.

By Hook or by Crook. Setting a feeding station up by hanging your wild bird feeder from a shepherd's hook you can deter the squirrels. If they can't climb up the wrought iron to the feeder and can't drop down from a tree, they can't get to the seed. It also gives the birds a view of predators, like cats, to avoid. On the other hand, birds prefer cover and feel safer when there is some foliage to hide in, so judicial placement to keep birds happy and squirrels frustrated.

Can't Beat 'Em, Feed 'Em. Squirrels can be quite a lot of fun to watch when they aren't pilfering your bird feeders. The agility and daring that make them such thieves also can give you an afternoon show of gymnastic daring do. Try setting up a feeder just for them. Use peanuts and corn instead of your expensive bird seed. Who knows, you might end up building a squirrel gym for them like I did.

Many people enjoy putting out birdseed for their feathered neighbors. However, squirrels also are attracted to the food and squirrels, like many animals, are very resourceful and determined when it comes to securing food. Their ability to jump and climb allows them to easily get into bird feeders, even those that people have tried to strategically place out of their reach. Putting out separate squirrel feeders that are conveniently located for them also does not prevent them from raiding bird feeders. Bird lovers have, in turn, over the years devised better feeders. Primary bird feeders squirrel proof strategies are to:

Put bird feeders away from trees or branches within jumping distance for squirrels. This is often done by mounting feeders on poles that are set in or on the ground. Of course, this presents a new problem: the squirrels can try to climb the bird feeder poles! A couple of things can be done to make it hard for the squirrels to climb up to the feeder. Some people have tried adding vaseline to a pole to make it too slippery to climb, but this isn't effective for long and is certainly messy. PVC piping has also been used to support pole-mounted feeders since its slick surface is hard to climb.

Add physical barriers like squirrel baffles to a bird feeder pole and/or add wire caging around the feeder housing. Squirrel baffles are commonly used to deter the critters from climbing up the pole for a pole-mounted feeder since they are cheap. These tend to be only partially effective by themselves, though. You would think that wire cages around tubular feeders would keep the squirrels from being able to reach the birdseed. These are not as attractive aesthetically, which is annoying if you would like to photograph your bird buddies. The wire cages can also be defeated by persistent squirrels. If you don't believe me, just try a quick search on YouTube for bird feeders squirrel proof.

Use feeders with weight sensors. Sophisticated bird feeders featuring weight sensitive perches have also been introduced. These can sense the weight of a squirrel and respond by closing feed ports or tipping or spinning the feeder. Closing the ports makes it hard for a squirrel to steal birdseed and tipping or spinning motions make it hard for a squirrel to stay mounted on the feeder. Closing access ports is not always as effective as it sounds, however, since squirrels can figure out how to swing these models sideways to shake the seeds out. Again, squirrels like other animals are very determined when it comes to securing food! Feeders that are designed to spin when the weight of a squirrel is detected can effectively drive the squirrel off without harming it. These are also more expensive to buy, but can be worth it in savings on birdseed and aggravation. Many people also like watching the squirrels take a spin on the feeder!
